Lefferts Community Library – Queens, NY
Location: 10334 Lefferts Boulevard, Jamaica, NY 11419
Project Description: Gut renovation of existing two-story library. Purpose of renovation was to introduce radio frequency identification technology for the distribution of books and media.
Size: 7,000 square feet
Challenge: Heat and cool multiple zones under a tight budget. Keep electrical costs down.
Achievements: Due to the tight budget, VAV air system could not be entertained, so we designed a constant-volume rooftop unit cooling and heating system for the entire building. Spaces with drastically-changing occupant loads were provided with bypass VAV boxes which work in cooling and heating modes. In addition, the rooftop unit works off of multiple space temperature sensors, which measure the average temperature throughout the space. To keep electrical costs down, the design team meticulously surveyed systems and re-used a good portion of existing wire and conduit for new HVAC equipment. |
