Looney's Pub, College Park, MD

Description: A new bar/restaurant located in College Park, Maryland, occupying the ground floor of a new mixed use development. The space will contain an arcade, dining spaces, bar area, a stage for music performances and food service support spaces.

Size:  8,200 square feet

Challenges: The building is a new construction, so most of the services were already in place before the layout for the space was developed. The space has a 60-ton cooling load, but no mechanical space for air handling units.

 Achievements: Through meticulous collaboration with the base building architect, the electrical, plumbing and kitchen exhaust services were coordinated to minimize disruption to this and other spaces. Air handlers and ductwork were tightly coordinated to fit so that platforms could be installed above the ceiling.

 The need for kitchen makeup air units was eliminated by designing a ventilation system that allows the already-conditioned outside air to travel to the kitchen. This eliminated energy use associated with the makeup system and also provided some “free” cooling of the kitchen itself.
