Project Description: Installation of new 120-ton absorption chiller plant. Chillers are powered by waste heat from an existing 1200-ton refrigeration plant which cools freezers for food storage.
Size: 100,000 square feet
Challenge: Design a free-cooling system to utilize waste heat from existing refrigeration process. Achievements: A heat exchanger was added to the existing 1200-ton refrigeration process to transfer heat from hot refrigerant gas to hot water. Hot water is then used to power (4) new 30-ton absorption chillers which will provide chilled water to existing DX air handlers. The existing DX coils which use electric compressors to provide cooling will now be used only during high peak hours. All other times, the chillers will provide free cooling to the air handlers |
